recently, a limit test at the guangzhou natural aging base, jointly held by the guangzhou research institute of synthetic materials and the guangzhou baiyun chemical industry, began. yang yunong, vice-president of the guangzhou institute; bi silian, expert at the china metal structure association; miu mingsong, general manager of baiyun chemical; and huang hengchao, vice-general-manager of baiyun chemical, were present.

the guangzhou institute studies aging and anti-aging of high polymer materials and helps formulate or amend national standards for high polymer material performance and aging tests. it has cooperated with numerous well-known chemical companies. the limit tests will offer more reliable data for design companies and will go a long way to support the establishment of industrial or national standards. experts and other parties involved were encouraged to pay attention to material anti-aging issues and offer their advice.

xie yufang, director of the guangzhou institute, released results from the first limit test on sealants for 50 years. the test, commissioned by a third scientific organ, showed that all samples maintained strength, elongation and adhesion after naturally aging for half a year.

there were no major differences between data from guangzhou and xinjiang regarding natural aging research. the results showed that good products can retain outstanding performance under various climate conditions. it also proved that aging tests on structure adhesives require at least half a year.

in 2012, baiyun chemical signed a 50-year limit test agreement with the guangzhou institute, kicking off two 50-year natural aging experiments in guangzhou and turpan. the agreement set a precedent in domestic sealant limit tests and marked a major step forward in china’s sealant aging research.

the silicone structural sealants currently in the market now only promise a 25-year service life. the limit test extended the time to 50 years to explore the aging-resistance performance of silicone structural sealants. the test compared data regularly and recorded data at the guangzhou and turpan facilities over 50 years. the results not only helped companies better understand the pros and cons of their products, but also boosted r&d of new products. the tests will offer more reliable and scientific data for future research.
